We all have our versions of Red Carpet moments in our lives. It could be getting ready for your high school reunion, walking down the aisle on your wedding day, or getting ready to race through the halls at school on your way to class. The pressure to look and feel your best is universal no matter what carpet you choose to walk.
Yesterday, I attended the HBO Emmy’s afterparty. This is always such a beautifully elaborate affair with lavish, dramatic decor. Every year, the impressive event team transforms the Pacific Design Center into an entirely new experience. This year, we were transported into a realm of Chinese royalty with magical pagodas, bridges, guilded statues and custom carpets and wallpaper.
We were treated to bountiful food and cocktails; great music and dancing; a photobooth complete with glam stations with Bobbi Brown makeup and pro artists, and of course, lots of celebs and Hollywood power players proudly clutching their Emmy’s.

There is always a massive press line that runs the length of the Pacific Design Center and a red carpet, which puts me into a bit of a panic. WTH was I going to wear. This year was especially tough because I had surgery only 5 1/2 weeks ago (hysterectomy) so I wasn’t feeling my best.
Following are my 9 tips for getting red carpet ready in a pinch:
One week out
- Pick The Dress: Yes, I know that you should start looking for an important dress weeks, if not months, ahead of time out but …. let’s be real. I usually wait until about a week out (sometimes days) and luckily, I have discovered an Italian brand that I absolutely LOVE for cocktail and black tie affairs. Chiara Boni creates beautiful luxurious dresses that really flatter a curvier figure like mine. I chose the Olanda dress because this princessy silhouette was new for me (I usually opt for a mermaid shape) and I found the shadow striping to be a beautifully dramatic touch. It’s really about the materials for me. This designer creates with a thick material that holds you in, almost like Spanx, which sounds bad I know, but these dresses are really comfy allowing you to dance the night away under the stars (like we did at the magically transformed Pacific Design Center last Sunday). - Now the clutch: The right clutch adds the extra oomph to any outfit and on the red carpet the right one can even function like jewelry. I chose this black hardshell minaudière by Inge Christopher in lizard-embossed metallic leather for my event because it was beautiful and functional. It was actually roomy enough to hold my iPhone 7 and a lipstick and powder. The Swarovski crystal-studded top lock closure would match almost any jewelry I decided to wear. The crossbody hidden chain shoulder strap also came in handy when dancing so I didn’t have to hold it all the time. Celebs and bloggers who have chosen Inge Christopher clutches for their red carpet moments include Gabrielle Union, Gigi Gorgeous and Shay Mitchell (who also happens to be a Vanity Girl).
