Location, location, location! It’s important in the home that you choose, and the home you choose for your business.

Mandy Jacobellis, CEO of Makeup Mandy and President of LAshX, has always called Melrose her home and it’s been a cornerstone of her success.  I’m so excited to have her join the Long Beach ISSE girl boss panel and share what went into choosing her dream location and much much more.

Mandy holds a special place in my heart because her Melrose studio was the first to use my vanities to light up her artistry with her clients.  Countless production crews head to Makeup Mandy when filming beauty expert segments and she is constantly named as a Red Carpet must-see when it comes to award season primping.

ISSE Panelist: Meet Joan Ngo COO of Sleekhair.com

There are some people you meet in this world who immediately make you feel like “everything is going to be alright” and Joan is someone who immediately just makes everything better.  It’s no surprise to me that she has been instrumental in growing her successful family business to 50+ employees from 10.  We immediately bonded when we met probably because we both transitioned into the beauty community from a non-profit background.

Joan sits in the unique position of Chief Operating Officer (a role not often thought of as traditionally “female”) and with a complex e-commerce operation like Sleekhair.com– is called upon to put her problem solving, relationship and organizational skills to the test on a daily basis.

Joan will be sharing her insight and tips on working with family and friends at the Long Beach ISSE girl boss panel.  Working with friends and family is a pretty common practice for people looking to launch and/or grow their business and comes with its own unique sets of challenges.

ISSE Panelist: Meet Breanna Armstrong of Beauty Store Business Magazine

One myth to those outside of the beauty industry is that it is full of catty people.  Having come from the non-profit fundraising sector prior to reinventing myself as a beauty boss – I had my reservations too and am very happy to say, my personal experiences have debunked that myth.

I find the beauty industry to be very supportive and full of amazing people who truly want to help others succeed.  Breanna Armstrong, managing editor of Beauty Store Business Magazine is one of those people.

In her role, she seeks to tell the stories of brands and beauty experts and connect them with potential clients and customers.  Her innate sense of trend, quality and forecasting makes her an invaluable resource to those businesses seeking this type of information.

A strategy that can help a business of ANY size grow is “How to Work With Celebrities and Influencers.”  Join us for an intimate panel along with fellow beauty expert Jenn Chan and learn such secrets and tips like how Breanna put together a groundbreaking cover featuring juggernauts Patrick Starrr, Jeffrey Star and Manny MUA in 2016.  And, if you are a brand owner, we invite you to bring social media samples for consideration for any of our blogs and/or outlets.

ISSE Panelist: Meet Manna Kadar of Manna Kadar Cosmetics

Last week the ISSE girl boss panelists and I met for a prep call.  Manna shared that she was picking out essentials for her baby daughter Shae as they get ready to travel to Paris because Manna Kadar Cosmetics is getting ready for the launch of QVC Paris!

It’s exactly this type of planning and balance that makes Manna such a valuable asset to the stellar girl boss panel this Saturday, January 28 @ 2:00 p.m. in room 204 at Long Beach ISSE.

Manna also has an education and experience in the Finance Sector, a barrier to many aspiring female entrepreneurs.  She will share her insight and tips on how to approach the financial industry while still being a total beauty loving, lip gloss wearing boss.

Girl boss and cosmetics guru Manna Kadar developed a passion at a very young age for not only the finest beauty products on earth, but for the business behind the most cutting-edge brands. In January of 2012, after years of careful research and development, Manna Kadar Cosmetics was born. A prestige line of products that merge the most cutting edge color trends with the finest ingredients, Manna Kadar Cosmetics are long-wearing and double duty. Adhering to the philosophy that less is more, Manna’s tricks of the trade are found in double-duty products such as Fantasy 3-in-1 that can be used as an eye shadow, blush, and highlighter.

Manna Kadar was featured in the Beauty Store Business Magazine for top 20 CEOs under 40 in the beauty industry. Proving that women can be successful in both beauty and business. (side note, BSB Editor Breanna Armstrong will be on my “How To Work with Celebrities and Influencers” the following day at ISSE).

Fun Fact:  Manna uses a Silver Vanity Girl Broadway mirror to help light up her beautiful jewel box of a showroom in Orange County, CA.

How We Met:  I sent out a newsletter to my customers and Manna responded and suggested we meet up for lunch.  We settled on Le Pain de Quotidien on Melrose, and bonded over our love of beauty, champagne, Paris and all things beauty boss.  Tip:  Be proactive when you want to meet another beauty boss – there is serious power in collaborations!

My Favorite Manna Kadar Cosmetics Item:  Liplocked lippie priming lip wand.  I always get compliments when I wear it and I love the easy one-handed chubby stick application.  It’s really long wearing and creamy!

ISSE Panelist: Meet Letty CEO & Founder of Vera Mona

I’m so excited to take the stage once again with Letty Calvo, the CEO, founder and all around #girlboss behind Vera Mona cosmetics at the ISSE Girl Boss Panel on January 28.  I’m absolutely in love with her Color Switch product AND her collaboration with vanity boy @jcmakeupmaster in creating the Cake & Bake makeup sponge is equally fabulous.   (It’s kind of fitting since I have RuPaul’s Drag Race running in the background this rainy Friday – and baking properly is gift from the drag makeup community :)

Letty will share some of her insight with those of you thinking about quitting your “day job” to launch your dream business and much more!

Read more about this powerhouse below and please come ready with any questions you may have for Letty, me or any of the other fabulous #GirlBoss panelists

Letty Calvo is the CEO and founder of Vera Mona cosmetics. In 2013, while she obtained her Master’s Degree in business, she designed an instant brush cleaner for a Start Up business course. Letty decided to share her idea of Color Switch® on her social media sites and it immediately went viral. She started Vera Mona from the garage of her home and eventually quit her day job in accounting to grow her company. Color Switch® is now sold in beauty boutiques worldwide and in all USA and Canada Sephora store locations. Letty continues to grow her brand by designing innovative products that make the daily beauty routine easy and enjoyable.
Side Note:  Letty is also a Vanity Girl and our Infinity mirrors lights her up as she gets ready for her busy day!  See, we really do love and use each other’s products : )
How we met:  I don’t even remember how Letty and I officially met.  I think we just crossed paths at one of the makeup shows – maybe IMATS or PhamExpo and then we just knew about each other’s products.  Girl Boss Tip:  Events are so important for industry networking and collaborations.

Vanity Girl Hollywood to moderate #girlboss panel at ISSE

Screenshot 2017-01-18 21.48.22

It’s really an exciting time to be a #girlboss especially in the beauty biz.  Join me on Saturday, January 28 at 2:00 p.m. as I moderate a panel with 4 of my favorite beauty entrepreneurs in the game at the Long Beach ISSE show.   The panelists include:

Amanda Jacobelis, CEO of Makeup Mandy and LASHX

Joan Ngo, COO of Sleek Hair

Letty Calvo, CEO and founder of Vera Mona

Manna Kadar, CEO of Manna Kadar Cosmetics

Panel Moderated by me,  Maxine of Vanity Girl Hollywood

According to this Forbes 2016 article, female entrepreneurship has grown over 30% since 2007 accounting for nearly 37% of all businesses.  I wonder how many of those businesses are in the beauty, hair and fashion space?

Beauty entrepreneurs are truly a unique breed and we have to tap into both sides of our brains.  We have to be creative AND have a strong business foundation in order to succeed in this competitive market.

This will be an intimate panel (space is limited) with real opportunities to hear directly from these powerhouse women who saw a niche in the market place, rolled up their sleeves and built something great.  Click here to buy your tickets to ISSE and stay tuned to meet the panelists via this blog!

P.S.  I will also be moderating a panel on “How to Work with Celebrities and Influencers” on Sunday, January 29 at noon featuring Beauty Editors and influencers in their own right, Breanna Armstrong of Beauty Store Business Magazine and Jennifer Chan of JennChanGlam.   Stay tuned for more on that!

If you have any questions for me or any of these panelists, please tweet me @VanityGirl or DM me on IG @VanityGirlHollywood. xo

Kim Thai x Sleek Hair x Vanity Girl at Making Strides OC

FullSizeRender (7)

Clockwise from Top:  Joan COO of Sleek Hair, YouTube Beauty Sensation Kim Thai, and Maxine CEO of Vanity Girl Hollywood.  2) It’s us again, not even 12 hours later at the MSABC walk 3) Kim and her motivational pillow talk at Sleekhair HQ, and the lady of the hour – birthday girl Kim Thai at her custom floral backdrop.

When I learned of Kim’s interest in breast cancer awareness, I was honored to collaborate with my American Cancer Society family – and quickly learned that the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer OC walk would be held the very next day at the world-famous Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

Sleekhair and Kim generously donated 10% of the proceeds from the Shopping Party (held just the night before) to the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer OC Walk.  I worked with Maya and the MSABC OC team to create yet another powerful collaboration for this cause.  We even quickly formed a small team to raise additional funds.

Huge thanks to MSABC OC 2016 for selecting Kim to be the Millennial speaker at the walk, and for having Joan and I share our #non-profit to #girlboss stories as well.  Vanity Girl Hollywood donated ANOTHER Pink Broadway vanity to a lucky walker to raise funds and awareness.  Kim was even interviewed on KCBS by the dynamic emcee Michele Giles!

That whole AMAZING weekend spoke to the power of collaborations sparked by the interest of one young woman’s interest in using her voice to make a difference.
